On Sundays there’s not really anywhere good to eat apart from Western restaurants. So the place I picked was Miyagawa Honten, the unagi shop on the restaurant floor of Matsuya department store in Ginza. Honestly… I could have just gone to a ramen shop, but having come all the way to Japan I felt I had to have eel at least once, so I headed to Ginza. Looking back now, I kind of regret it.
Chopsticks
The main shop is in Tsukiji. It’s famous for doing Kanto-style eel well. Truth is, I’ve already been to a few places famous for Kanto-style eel, so this time I wanted to try Kansai-style, but the well-known place wasn’t open because it was Sunday. That hurt.
Starter from the omakase course
It has eel in it, and it’s just okay.
Unaju, Take (竹) grade
It was cooked well, but the eel didn’t have much fat on it. I used to think eel was still decent up to about this time of year, but it seems Japan’s climate is hotter than I thought. I guess I’ve lost a lot of my feel for it.
Suimono and oshinko
These are the standard sides at an eel shop, but they charge for all of them. That’s why the omakase course isn’t cheap.
Dessert
The beans were sweet. Not bad. Overall it wasn’t great for the price, and I’m thinking next time on a Sunday lunch I should just have ramen.
