Misoichi, a Ramen Shop in Koenji

I’m here on a trip to Tokyo, and somehow I just can’t find the time to sit down to a proper bowl of ramen. I got back late at night this day too, and since it looked like I’d have even less time for ramen from here on, I went to a ramen shop near where I was staying. It’s on Kannana, a well-known main road in Tokyo, so it stays open late.

Miso ramen

misoichi

The miso broth is decent, but there’s a bit of MSG in it. Well, it’s not a hugely famous ramen shop, and with a concept like this I guess it can’t be helped.

The noodles

misoichi

They were cooked just right, but the noodles themselves are pretty ordinary.

Karamiso ramen (spicy miso)

misoichi

This is the spicy one. It’s basically the same base broth. Again, because of the MSG I couldn’t drink much of the soup and just fished out some of the noodles.

The noodles

misoichi

This one uses the same noodles too. The unusual thing is that the toppings are self-service. You pile on as many toppings as you like, then work out the price yourself and put the money in. The toppings were on the cheap side. Other than that it was an ordinary, slightly-better-than-average ramen shop. In the end, just as I expected, I didn’t make it to any ramen shop other than this one on this trip. I live a life with a packed schedule, so next time I need to research more ramen shops that stay open late.
