Having come all the way to Tottori, I couldn’t just leave without eating somewhere good. I asked someone who used to live around here if they knew any good places, and off we went.
The place we ended up at is Ohayodo, a small eatery inside a market in Tottori.
We arrived listening to the weekend radio show “A, Abe Reiji ~beyond the average~”. We had to wait about 30 minutes for it to open. From the outside it looks so run-down that you’d never guess it was a good place unless someone told you.
The medai sashimi my companion ordered
Really thick slices and a huge amount. Looks like they took one big fish and piled the whole thing on. It was tasty, but there was so much that I was getting worn out by the end.
The medai ara-daki (simmered fish head and bones) I ordered
This was an overwhelming portion too. It tasted great, but there was way too much and I didn’t know what to do with it all. Next time I should order something smaller, like the horse mackerel sashimi set.
Miso soup full of vegetables
Made with inexpensive ingredients, but it had a clean, deep flavor.
Rice
Tottori University is near here, and I think the portions are big because they cater to students and market workers. And of course the taste couldn’t be better. I even ate two of the eggs they give you as a freebie. It’d be a great place to go when you’re really starving… but the sand dunes are such a bleak spot that I’m not sure I’ll ever have a reason to go back.
