The town where I live is famous for crab. Well.. probably because it faces the East Sea (the Sea of Japan)? I’d been thinking about going to a crab specialist once before winter ended, and then I heard about a good place. It’s a restaurant near the harbor that doubles as a guesthouse, and apparently on weekends you have to queue to eat there.. So I got up on a weekend morning and went.
Flowers in the front yard, snapped for no particular reason
The weather was really nice that day.
The Nihonkai set I ordered
It’s 2,000 yen, but it’s a generous spread. There’s even a whole big crab.
The Matsuya set my companion ordered
It’s 2,500 yen. The base is the same, with uni and sashimi added. The Nihonkai set alone is plenty to fill you up, so there was no need to go this far.
Close-up of the crab
It was packed with meat. Taking it apart took quite a while.
Steamed dishes
Sashimi
Tempura
The cooking isn’t especially skilled, but the ingredients are fresh, so it tastes great. That’s usually how local favorites are.
Kanijiru (crab soup)
They’re generous with the ingredients, so it’s delicious.
Chawanmushi, probably..
This place tastes great and is very satisfying, but after going all out on a crab that big in one go, I feel a bit crabbed out. The portions were pretty big too. That’s enough for this year, and the season’s almost over anyway, so I’ll take it on again next year. I’m already looking forward to winter..
