There’s a famous tonkatsu place in this neighborhood, so I went there when a friend came to visit over the weekend. It’s called Minoya. Apparently it opened in 1960. Ah… but maybe it isn’t really a famous place… I should probably just call it a popular one.
The lunchtime line is no joke.
Still, what can you do. You line up. Live in Japan long enough and you get used to waiting and standing in lines.

The tonkatsu set meal is a mere 500 yen~ This isn’t the 1980s, so can they really stay in business charging that little?

It’s miso soup with pork in it. And it’s absolutely delicious. This alone is enough to make the rice go down easily.
The tonkatsu finally arrives
The portion is huge. The taste is very ordinary. It’s fried to order, so the meat is good, but the batter is hard, it’s oily, and, the deciding factor, they used way too much pepper. Considering the 500-yen price, asking for more than this would be daylight robbery, but still, I didn’t feel like coming back a second time.
Rice
The standard serving is about two portions’ worth, and apparently you can order even more. Well… with tonkatsu like this, I can’t see anyone ordering extra rice… It’s a fine place to grab a cheap meal, but I don’t think it’s worth queuing for. It’d be perfect for people like students who want to eat a lot but don’t have much money, but I’m not at that age anymore.
