Mikuni, Nanoha, Kamukura, Hachikuro, Chen Mapo Tofu

This post was written in 2005. Shop details and prices may have changed since then.

Here’s a round-up of photos I’ve been saving up.
The photos from La Bettola in Ginza, where I ate and came away ridiculously happy, will get a post of their own.
(The sea urchin pasta that melts in your mouth was pretty much a dream..)
I think it was called Cafe Mikuni – a small French place in the basement of the Odakyu department store in Shinjuku –
and I ordered their signature foie gras donburi. (Not the full foie gras donburi, a simplified version though..)
Mr. Mikuni is a hugely famous French chef in Japan. Since it’s a cafe he opened
under his own name, I figured the food had to be good, so I gave it a try. Sure enough, it tasted good, but…
the prices were a bit steep..

It’s foie gras made into a rice bowl, and I never imagined it would come together into such an exquisite balance of flavors.
Seriously! Delicious. The foie gras melts in your mouth.. I think women would love it.
The only drawbacks are the high price and the small portion.. Not a place for guys to go when they’re hungry..
Second up is Nanoha, a Japanese buffet in front of my office. The display is a bit sad-looking.. -_-;;
It was decent enough. But buffets always make me overeat.. I should really try to hold back..

Looks like dog food, doesn’t it..
The third one has no photos, but I went to Dotonbori Kamukura ramen, right in the middle of
Kabukicho in Shinjuku. Dotonbori Kamukura of course has its main shop in Dotonbori, Osaka.. It tasted
hardly any different from the main shop in Osaka.. though the price and portion were a bit different..
When I went to Osaka before, I thought Kinryu Ramen was better, but tasting it again, I think Kamukura
is the better one. Kinryu hits harder, which is probably why I felt that way. The person I went with
even said it was the best ramen they’d ever had in Japan.
At Odaiba, where I went yesterday, I found a Honey and Clover cafe – a cafe themed on a manga
I love.. The line was long.. I wanted to buy something, but I couldn’t be bothered to queue,
so I just took a picture of Hagu-chan and came home.. Cute, right?

As for the photo being so big.. -_-;; must be the resize tool’s fault..
While I was in Odaiba, I also went to Chen Mapo Tofu.
So many of you had raved about it that I really wanted to try this place at least once.

This is the basic set meal. I think you’re better off getting the set one step up from this,
the one that comes with dessert. The mapo tofu is really spicy and salty.. so it’s good to cleanse your palate
with something sweet, even something small. For me the mapo tofu was so intense I could barely taste anything.
Still, the tofu itself wasn’t bad, at least..
