I heard Hwaryong Banjeom is famous for its japchae rice, so I went to give it a try.

Being Bucheon, I suspect it is one of those Chinese restaurants run by an ethnic Chinese family.

The atmosphere is that of an ordinary Chinese place, but there tends to be a bit of a queue, so the room is packed with people.

Japchae rice

It came out looking good, but it was spicier than I expected. A peppery kind of heat, I suppose.. Young people probably love heat like this, but for me it was just okay. I am not thrilled about the current craze for chili jjamppong either; it feels like everyone has fallen a bit too hard for spicy food. It is rough going for a spice wimp like me.

The inside

The fried rice underneath is stir-fried properly, so it does taste good. The problem is just that it is too spicy.
