I’m honestly not sure what the East Pacific Center in Shenzhen is supposed to be… There’s a food court and a supermarket in the basement, a shopping mall on the first and second floors… and people seem to live there too, so it feels like a mixed-use residential tower, yet it sits right where all the office buildings are… In Korean terms, it’s like having a residential complex smack in the middle of Teheran-ro? Anyway… I don’t really know, but since there’s a mall, I took a walk around.
The view
The sign says Donghai International Center, and I guess “center” is the translation of the last part.
A bakery
Nothing spectacular, but at least there’s a chain bakery…
Xijiade?
Seems to be a place selling shrimp dumplings, and the illustration is cute.
A goods shop
Small, but there’s a place like this too…
Beers
There’s a blt supermarket here too, and this one has a separate liquor section.
Liquor
Wuliangye costs around 600,000 won when you buy it at a supermarket like this… and to think how freely we poured it… Dot dot dot…
Macallan and so on…
I even spotted some Matsui whisky… The Japanese whisky lineup seems pretty decent…
Whisky and so on…
Looking at the prices, it doesn’t seem that much cheaper than Korea… In China, the cheap stuff is really cheap and the expensive stuff is expensive… In other words… there isn’t much liquor worth bringing home… that’s my conclusion…
They have Dassai too…
Honestly, the tastes and trends here are impressive… I don’t think Korea is quite at this level… I suppose people living in a residential complex like this just casually pick up a bottle of Dassai… something like that…
They sell Rieussec too…
The price seems not bad, maybe… though it’s been so long since I drank wine that I can’t really tell…
Rainbow mangoes from Panzhihua
The color was so pretty I couldn’t not buy them, and the taste was simply a work of art. They’re big, evenly ripened all the way through, and plenty sweet. Among the countless mangoes I’ve eaten so far, these were top tier. I looked up Panzhihua and it turns out to be a city in southwestern Sichuan. It’s deep in the Chinese interior, hard to get to, and hardly anyone in Korea has heard of it, yet the mangoes grown there are world class… It made me realize you can never really know what China is like unless you come here…
Muji
Muji in Korea or Japan has very subdued colors, but Muji in China feels noticeably more colorful. Every country has its own character, I guess…
A fancy restaurant
A quick look showed it’s the kind of place that runs 300,000-500,000 won per person… So China is expensive where it’s expensive… With liquor costing that much, no wonder the food does too…
A gelato shop
This chain seems pretty popular. I see it all over the place…
Macadamias
First time I’d seen them sold like this, so I bought some.
The cracking tool
You twist this to crack them open, but for the price and the effort, the macadamias weren’t all that amazing… Still, cracking them one by one like this would probably make you drink a bit more slowly… Nice for a nightcap at home after a night out, I suppose…
