I had always read 55 Bread as “Go-Go Bread” — go-go being how you say five-five in Japanese — but officially it is “Fifty-Five Bread”. It is a seriously hip bakery, and yet there is not a single review of it on Tabelog, Japan’s big restaurant review site. How everyone finds out about it and makes the trip anyway, I have no idea. Bread obsessives really are something.
The place
The location genuinely has nothing to do with any main street; it sits on what is more or less a wooded hillside.

The bread
This is a one-man bakery, and still the range of bread is enormous.

Today’s picks
The walnut baguette in particular was an all-timer, both for the crunch and for the level of salt.
Rusks
The wall
The decorating has real personality.
Entrance to the bakehouse
It is roomy inside.
BOSE
The owner clearly knows a thing or two.
The LPs
SOUP STOCK 55 T-shirt
I have no idea what it is about, but it has character.
Cuban sandwich
Just selling this is impressive on its own, and it turns out to taste good too. Though whether it is still worth queueing for the way they do in the film Chef, I am not so sure.
Sandwich
This one was worth eating as well. A place that is good is good at whatever it makes.
