Star Samarkand in Dongdaemun

Once I worked out just how much there is around Dongdaemun, I went back again the next time.

Oldies Taco on the way there

Star samarkand.

This place was seriously hip.. and there is a famous sundaeguk joint right next door..

I had come by before, and this looked like the best of the bunch. The samsa bread out front in particular looked ridiculously good.

Samsa

Star samarkand.

Completely the real deal.

Samsa

Star samarkand.

From the outside it looks a bit like a croissant, but the inside is packed with meat. It is 4,000 won apiece, and the filling is seriously generous. I asked one of the staff and they said the lamb and the beef samsa were the popular ones, so I bought both. Both were strongly seasoned, with the meat cut so it had a nice chew to it and plenty of juice, but the lamb had a strong, distinctive herby flavor and was the tastier of the two.. (That part is a matter of taste, so it probably comes down to preference..) It would work well in place of a proper meal, and I found myself thinking that bread this good actually existed in the world.. I strongly recommend eating it while it is still warm.. If I lived near Dongdaemun I might well have made it a staple.
