Evening came around and obviously dakgalbi was in order, so I headed for Myeongdong in Chuncheon, the most famous spot for it. Dakgalbi places are actually dotted all over Chuncheon, but for a first go you head to the most famous one.
This sort of vibe
Winter Sonata is apparently still famous.
The main street
Turns out the dakgalbi places aren’t on the main street, they’re tucked away in the back lanes.
Roughly this sort of vibe
There are a huge number of dakgalbi places. And they all look much the same as each other.
Woomi Dakgalbi
This looks like the most famous one, but I got there a bit late and there were no seats. Something to attempt next time..
Myeongmul Dakgalbi
This place is famous too, so I went in.
The table set-up
It is dakgalbi, after all, so I ordered a bottle of soju as well.
The menu
The prices aren’t bad. Soju at 4,000 won is something to be thankful for. With Seoul getting expensive, a trip out to the provinces starts to feel worthwhile.
Fry it up properly..
It takes a while to cook through..
Inside
It was pretty spacious.
Give it a rough stir-fry..
Added a portion of udon noodles too..
The udon turned out to be on the house. The distinctive sauce, which somehow tastes a bit like ramen soup stock, is good enough that you just keep on eating. That said, the sauce is so strong that it does rather bury the other flavours.
For somewhere to drop into on a trip, neither the price nor the taste is bad. Other people who come to Chuncheon often say charcoal galbi tastes better than griddle dakgalbi, so next time I should give the charcoal galbi a try.
