The town centre of Toyohashi turned out to have a surprisingly solid food scene. When I went there was an event on called Hashigo Night, where you buy a coupon and get to eat and drink on the cheap. As a result, long queues had formed outside all the many places taking part. A city that puts on events for its residents like that — seems like a good town to live in..

They have a huge range of drinks.. All-you-can-drink is 2,000 yen for 90 minutes, which strikes me as a pretty good concept.

Bon Toraya’s Pyraene

It is a Toyohashi specialty. I had no idea what it was, but it is packed with cream inside — basically a roll cake. The sponge was really moist and the cream was smooth, so I came away very satisfied. If you ever travel to Toyohashi, it is worth buying one.
