Flatbreadz, a sandwich shop in Karuizawa

Flatbreadz has to count as one of Karuizawa’s specialties too. Everything is made with local wagyu and vegetables and bread from Asanoya, after all. I really like that kind of concept. When you travel somewhere and the local specialty isn’t even on the menu, it feels a bit pointless — you start wondering why you came all that way.

The place

Flatbreads

It’s inside the food court. Karuizawa, where even the food court has good places in it..

With the explanation written up..

Flatbreads

Roughly this kind of menu.

Flatbreads

The burger I bought

Flatbreads

It is somewhere between a sandwich and a burger in style, and the wagyu was tasty with fresh vegetables to go with it. Very satisfying as a full meal.

Fries

Flatbreads

Just so-so..

A sandwich on its own doesn’t fill you up.. so I wandered around looking for something else.. and a lot of people were ordering sanzokuyaki..

Shinshu Gurume Nojo

Flatbreads

It seems to be connected to a dairy farm as well.

Sanzokuyaki set meal

Flatbreads

What sanzokuyaki turns out to be is a giant version of karaage. Korean fried chicken goes with beer, but Japanese karaage goes with rice. The sanzokuyaki was so good that the rice just kept disappearing.. maybe because the batter is thin and crisp. It is a similar style of dish made from the same bird, and yet the character is completely different..

Udon

Flatbreads

I ordered this just because, but the taste was nothing special..
