I heard a rumor that a long-established Hungarian cafe-slash-restaurant had opened in Omotesando, that fashionable part of town, so I went to check it out. They say it has 150 years of tradition, and a restaurant with that much history is worth going out of your way for.

Entrance

It looks like a cafe. You can have a meal, enjoy dessert, have a drink, that kind of place.

Goulash

For 1,000 yen you get a single bowl of soup, but it’s genuinely, startlingly delicious. Whether it’s always been this good or whether it got tweaked after coming to Japan, I can’t say.

Traditional cake

As for the cake, the recent ones seem to suit my palate better than the traditional one. A cake from an era when sugar was scarce might have a hard time appealing to today’s generation, I suspect.. It really is beautiful, though.

The goulash was so good that I’d love to try the other dishes too, but I rarely have a reason to go to Omotesando on my own. I’ll have to save it for another day.
