Monshiri, a Yakiniku Joint in Shinjuku’s Golden Gai

Now that I’m a middle-aged guy, I find myself at yakiniku places a lot. This time four of us old guys met up in Shinjuku and went for yakiniku. The place is called Mongsiri in Korean, which comes out as Monshiri in Japanese… Anyway, it was better than I expected.

Front entrance

It’s at the lower end of Golden Gai.

Side dishes

monsiri

This place is especially generous with the side dishes. The trade-off is that the meat is a little pricey.

Salad

As always, starting with tongue

monsiri

Decent quality.

I remember this being chicken.

Other than Gyu-Kaku, I don’t think I’ve ever had poor-quality meat at a yakiniku place in Japan.

Probably kalbi

A glass of highball

The meat was good quality and the portions were fine, but the prices were a bit steep so I was worried. Luckily us old guys don’t eat that much meat anymore, and we held it to 4,000 yen a head. Back in the day we’d probably have eaten 6,000 yen’s worth each. A tasty meal, but a little bittersweet, you could say…
