Heiwaen is the yakiniku place from Kodoku no Gurume (Solitary Gourmet), known for meat you eat with wasabi. When you actually go, it sits right in the middle of a residential neighborhood, definitely not somewhere you’d stumble upon while walking by.
Charcoal fire
Well, nothing special…
Cabbage
They bring out a plateful.
Cider
Quite a few Japanese-brand ciders have been coming out lately. This one is from Nikka Whisky, so I gave it a try… it was just okay.
Wasabi kalbi
Great quality.
It comes with wasabi.
Eaten together, it’s superb. Wagyu and wasabi really are made for each other.
Meat
At this point I can’t quite remember which cuts these were. They all tasted good, though.

Meat
The quality was good across the board.
It’s a yakiniku place with great value for money, but there are plenty of yakiniku joints in the city center too, so I’m not sure I’ll be back. The problem, if you can call it that, is that there are just too many hidden gems…
