I’m not much of a cook, but I do have a knack for throwing together something quick to eat. Eating out is easier, but then I can’t keep myself in check.
Beef
I picked up some grass-fed beef at Sareoga Mart, and pan-seared it was decent enough. For value for money nothing beats American beef, but they say grass-fed is healthier, so grass-fed it is. It’s unpopular in Japan, so you can’t buy it there at all. And when I cook beef I just blast it in a frying pan over high heat. Those of you who grill, I salute you.
Hanwoo ramyeon
…well, not quite: I used grass-fed beef, but this is the kind of thing Hanwoo really suits.
Hayashi rice
Yeah, Hanwoo wins.. from now on I’ll just buy the unhealthy Hanwoo instead..
Got Jjajang
I’ve tried all sorts of premium instant jjajang, and Samyang’s Got Jjajang, with its slight kick, was my favourite. Got Jjamppong, on the other hand, was too spicy for me.. For jjamppong, Bul Jjamppong is the best of the bunch.
Curry Queen (Chung Jung One)
Korea finally has a curry worth eating.
Roughly like this..
It has a bit of a kick, which I think makes it better than Japanese curry. If you’re still eating Ottogi curry, give a new curry a try..
Broccoli
The more you live alone, the more you need to eat properly, and broccoli in particular I try to eat as often as I can.
Choma jjamppong
E-mart sells it so I gave it a go, but at around 4,000 won a bowl there’s no big advantage over going out for one.
Jjamppong
That said, the broth is on par with jjamppong from a restaurant. The noodles fall a bit short, though. Not bad for when you can’t be bothered to go out.
Autumn scenery
Had nowhere else to put this one.. I think it was a park somewhere around Yangjae.
Convenience-store packet ramyeon cooker
I tried it out of curiosity. It supposedly takes only 4 minutes, but you have to queue, so in practice I waited about 15. Cup noodles just need hot water, but packet ramyeon means a queue for the cooking machine.
Kimjang kimchi
A seasonal treat. Once I’m older I’ll have to make it myself..
Paldo Bul Jjamppong
Of all the packet jjamppong I’ve tried, this comes closest to real jjamppong. Jin Jjamppong tastes more like ordinary ramyeon, so people who are used to that will probably prefer it. To each their own.
