Bokhwaru is an old Chinese restaurant run by an ethnic Chinese family, tucked inside Bupyeong Market near Bupyeong Station. I heard it is the oldest Chinese restaurant still in business. It has the history, but the word was that the food is good too, so I went with modest expectations.

They renovated after this, so it may look a bit different now.

Fried dumplings

I was on my own, and ordering tangsuyuk felt like a bit much, so I tried the fried dumplings instead. They taste about how you would expect from the photo. Next time I will come with a few people and definitely order the tangsuyuk.

Jjajangmyeon

I went back and forth between jjajang, gan-jjajang and yuni-jjajang, and ended up just ordering the regular jjajang.

And it is genuinely delicious. I never knew jjajang could be this nutty and savory. On top of that, the thin noodles go so well with it that I just inhaled the whole bowl.

Eating this place’s jjajangmyeon brought back the jjajangmyeon of my childhood, which I got to eat maybe once or twice a year at best. Back then there was nothing more delicious. The sauce was rich and nutty, topped with cucumber, kidney beans and quail eggs. Going to Bokhwaru showed me that my old memories were not wrong. I hope places like this keep doing well for a long time. I wish the city of Incheon would invest in places like this instead of the Asian Games.
