Following Sambaekjip, Hyundaiok, another famous gukbap place from Jeonju, has opened a branch in Sinsa-dong. Kongnamul gukbap (bean sprout soup with rice) is not that spectacular a dish, so I have no idea why two places of the same genre opened in Sinsa-dong, but I had to eat dinner anyway, so I went to check it out.
The menu
Unlike Sambaekjip, the menu is fairly long. Looking around, quite a few people were ordering things other than the bean sprout soup.
Side dishes
Kimchi and some jeotgal (salted seafood) came out, and they tasted fine.
Gim (seaweed)
You can see they tried to present it nicely.
Kongnamul gukbap
The basic version was a bit plain; I think adding the squid topping would make it tastier.
Egg
This place only gives you one.
The kongnamul gukbap tasted decent, and honestly I could not tell much difference from Sambaekjip. But the lighting is bright and the whole atmosphere feels too showy, so for me Sambaekjip is the better one. Having a wide menu also does not suit someone like me who visits for one specific dish. I do not think I will be back.
