Gana Tonkatsu House is a place serving tonkatsu in the style of a Korean gisa sikdang, a taxi-driver diner. Japanese-style tonkatsu shops are all the rage these days, but every now and then I get a craving for a traditional place like this.
The place
Seeing all those taxis parked outside, it definitely has that taxi-driver-diner feel.
Down to the basement…
This is the place… “We always treat you like family,” it says…
The menu
If a taxi-driver diner charges this much, the drivers must be doing pretty well for themselves. Then again, part of it is probably just Gangnam prices…
Inside
There are goldfish too.
The spread
They bring out these enormous cucumber chilies, but they aren’t spicy at all, so they’re more like a salad. The kimchi was good too.
Tonkatsu
The meat is delicious, of course, and the tangy sauce over the crispy coating cuts through the greasiness nicely… I think this is Korean-style tonkatsu in its perfected form.
Cut open
The quality of the meat is good. Anyway, price aside, everything about this place was fine. It would be a good spot to come to whenever I’m craving Korean-style tonkatsu.
