Tonkatsu Tonchinkan, Asakusa

Tonchinkan is a tonkatsu and shabu-shabu chain that uses Kagoshima pork. Kagoshima pork is so good to begin with that it tastes great even when it is cooked without much care, and it reminds me a bit of Jeju black pork. It is not a place to have big expectations for, but I was craving tonkatsu near home, so I gave it a try.

Well, it is decent. Being a chain, there is a bit of a porky smell to it. If you look closely at the photo, there is wasabi in the top left corner, and this place’s signature way of eating tonkatsu is to put wasabi on the meat and dip it in soy sauce. You can just dip it in the sauce as usual, but eating it with wasabi, fiddly as it is, really cut through the greasiness.

This one was also fairly ordinary.

It tasted about what you would expect for the price. I would not say it was better than the price suggests. Still, it was worthwhile just to learn what tonkatsu eaten with wasabi is like.
