I had heard rumours that a bakery with great croissants had opened in Shinjuku, and even though I had walked around that area a few times, I had no idea. I looked it up on Tabelog and was surprised to find a bakery in a spot like that. It is right across the street from the south exit of Shinjuku Station, so it is really easy to find. I always assumed bakeries were either hard to get to or tucked inside department stores, so a bakery imported straight from France in a place like this.. For the record, there is also a Krispy Kreme Doughnuts just in front of this shop..

It is a pretty big place. The second floor is an eat-in space. It looks like a good option for a light meal in Shinjuku too.

Bread

The croissants were around 180 yen, so not that expensive, and they were delicious. All the other breads looked great too, which made it hard to decide what to pick.

Baguettes

The black baguette apparently has squid ink in it. I was tempted, but I am on a diet these days so I held back. Eating a meal bread of that size is no easy task..

The counter

There are some cakes, including cream puffs, and scones as well, and really a huge variety of bread. They sell ice cream in one corner too. This is the kind of place you should come to with a group and share rather than on your own.

Both the taste and the atmosphere seem good. It looks competitive even compared with other bakeries like Dominique Saibron.

They also sell biscuits, jams and the like.

Quite the serious operation.

What I bought that day: a chausson aux pommes, a croissant, and a bread with gorgonzola and fig

All three were top notch. The croissant was especially good. At this level it deserves to be called a top bakery.

It seems Gontran Cherrier is not only in Japan within Asia, but also in Hong Kong and Singapore. I am hoping one opens in Korea at some point too.
