Ramen Nagi, a Niboshi Ramen Specialist in Shinjuku Golden Gai

Ramen Nagi has long been famous as a niboshi-style (dried sardine broth) ramen shop, but I rarely had a reason to go to Shinjuku Golden Gai, so I only just got around to it. Golden Gai is also the setting of the drama Midnight Diner. It is a pretty run-down looking area, and a ramen shop with a queue does not really seem to fit in here.

Entrance

This is roughly what the neighborhood looks like, though it does get a little better once night falls.

The front

ramen nagi

It is on the second floor and has only a handful of seats, a really tiny ramen shop. I even suspected they were making people line up on purpose.

Tokusei ramen

ramen nagi

It is decent, but ramen shops at this level are not exactly rare. I stood in line for over 30 minutes, and I am not sure it was really worth it. I guess it just means a lot of the people who come to this area want a good bowl of ramen..

The noodles

ramen nagi

Extra-thick noodles with a very salty broth, a really intense flavor. These days this kind of ramen does not appeal to me much. I think I will dig deeper into shio ramen instead.
