I’d heard for ages that there was a Korean set-menu restaurant famous for its bibimbap in Myeongdong, the area where all the Japanese visitors gather, and this time I finally got the chance to go. The main branch is in Jeonju, and the Myeongdong one is apparently a satellite. At first I thought I’d keep it light and just have a single bowl of bibimbap a la carte, but since I’d come all the way out to Myeongdong, I switched to the course.
Side dishes
I’ve never been to Jeonju myself, so I have no idea whether these are up to standard or not.
Moju
The color is as dark as chocolate, and the taste was nutty and sweet. Just the thing for a drink alongside the meal. They sell it by the bottle too, so it might be worth picking one up on the way out and drinking it with a suitable Korean dish.
Buchimgae
Maybe because it had been fried in advance, it was nothing special.
Salad
Neatly put together, but there’s a bit too much sesame oil in it.
Hwangtae-jjim (steamed dried pollack)
It’s not that the quality is bad, but so much of it came out as part of the course that I started to worry whether I could finish it all.
Bulgogi
The quality of the meat seemed a little on the low side.
Salad
Dolsot bibimbap
I haven’t eaten Jeonju bibimbap all that often, so I can’t say what level this place is at. It’s tasty, but nothing that really moved me.
Bibimbap
The ingredients are generous and the taste is good too. This time I came with a Japanese friend, who was very happy with it.
Natuur ice cream
Ice cream from a specialty ice cream shop nearby, for dessert. The taste was ordinary, but for Myeongdong the price was less than I expected.
