Mokran is a Chinese restaurant that offers outstanding value for money. I went a few times back when it was in Apgujeong, but this was my first visit since it moved to Seodaemun.
We started with fried dumplings, but I forgot to take a picture. They may look like the complimentary fried dumplings you get at any ordinary Chinese restaurant, but they are properly made, good enough to order on their own. They go nicely with a beer to start things off.
Dongpo pork
Mokran’s signature dish, which takes so much work that you have to reserve it a day ahead. It is cooked so meltingly tender that it goes down after just a couple of chews.
Yusanseul
Nothing at Mokran ever comes out half-hearted, whatever you order, so just order whatever you feel like that day.
Yuxiang shiitake
Shiitake mushrooms topped with minced seafood.
Yurinji
The photo did not come out well because we had darkened the room to watch the Infinite Challenge West Coast song festival on a projector phone… but this is another of Mokran’s popular dishes.
Tangsuyuk
A safe choice.
Chinese naengmyeon
I ordered this as the meal course, and it was refreshing and delicious. The broth is full of savoury flavour and the noodles are nicely chewy. It might just be the perfect summer treat. It is called naengmyeon, but it is a completely different style from Korean naengmyeon.
Birthday cake
Two people at the gathering had birthdays, so we got this cake from a place called Atelier Mami. It was more a lump of chocolate than a cake… It was hard and not easy to eat. Very sweet, very rich and far too big, so finishing it was no small task, but I think it would be nice cut into small pieces and eaten with coffee.
