Ginpei, a Japanese restaurant in Ginza

Ginpei in Ginza is a Japanese restaurant that came up from Osaka. Dinner is a rather pricey full course, but lunch is cheap and generous, which has made it famous among the office workers around here.

You get to pick the fish you’ll eat today yourself.

ginza ginpei

Choose a fish, tell them how you want it cooked, and that’s how it comes out. The cooking is pretty skilled, but the fish wasn’t all that fresh. Well, it’s not winter, so I guess it can’t be helped.

Tofu

ginza ginpei

Clean and mild. A big portion, and high quality too.

Sesame

ginza ginpei

It’s a set.

Soy sauce

ginza ginpei

For 1,500 yen, you have to say this is a good spread.

Tempura

ginza ginpei

The ingredients are a bit ordinary.

Tororo soba

ginza ginpei

It’s all proper Japanese food, but nothing on the menu really stands out.

The sea bream ara-daki (simmered head and collar) I ordered

ginza ginpei

Nicely cooked, but the fish wasn’t fatty, so it wasn’t especially tasty.

Mebaru, I think it was…

ginza ginpei

This one was nicely cooked too.

Rice

ginza ginpei

I’d heard the rice is served freshly cooked, but it didn’t taste particularly great. Maybe it was just this time. It’s good value, and judging from other people’s reviews it seems like a tasty place, but when I ate there I couldn’t find anything special. A bit of a shame, but some days are like that.

Gotta have dessert. We headed straight to Toraya.

Barley tea

ginza toraya

It was a hot day, so it tasted even better.

Strawberry shaved ice

ginza toraya

Japanese shaved ice is a bit different from Korean bingsu. The jelly was good, the strawberries were good, and apart from the slightly steep price it’s excellent. With the heat I end up eating shaved ice a lot, and I think I’ll be craving this one often.
