I spent the weekend in Kyoto. As an office worker who can only travel on weekends, there was no way to time it for peak bloom, but the day was clear and warm and I could really soak up the full feeling of spring. When you work in a dreary office, weekend trips are an event you simply can’t do without. I’m glad I got to go back to Kyoto again this year.

I headed here as soon as I arrived in Kyoto. It had been a while since I last took the bus, and I fumbled around quite a bit. The crowds were smaller than I expected, so I probably would have been better off just driving.

It’s a lovely place whenever you visit. The peak had just passed, but it was still well worth seeing.

After taking it all in, I moved on toward Heian Shrine. My lunch reservation was in front of Kyoto City Hall, so that’s how the route worked out. I ended up on that road without any plan at all, and it was amazingly beautiful. I think that’s exactly what makes trips to an old capital like this so much fun: you can count on happy accidents.
