There’s this “Japanese supermarket tier list” going around on social media lately, and Bio Atsumi sits pretty close to the top of it. It isn’t cheap, but it’s packed with fun ingredients you’d rarely see at a regular supermarket. I couldn’t shop there every day, but it’s a fun place to drop by now and then.
The liquor section
Lots of popular bottles here.
Whisky and more
Quite the selection.
Even whiskies like these…
They’ve got Yoichi, Taketsuru, and even Miyagikyo.
All sorts of groceries
They even have rye bread. I usually buy this kind of thing on Amazon, so this was the first time I’d seen it actually sold in a supermarket.
Cheeses
You can buy cheeses you’ve never even heard of. They’re a bit pricey, though.
Beers
These are all premium beers too. Not a cheap one in sight…
Patagonia Provisions
Turns out Patagonia makes food products. They seem to be meant as emergency rations or camping gear for the outdoors.
Curries
Lots of unusual curries.
Fish
The kinmedai’s eyes were so bright and clear that I just had to buy one. I was surprised to see fish this fresh on sale.
Strawberry jam
It’s on sale…
Yuda Yogurt
I’d heard this yogurt was popular these days, so I gave it a try. It was thick and chewy, and really good.
Pecorino
You can make cacio e pepe with this, but grating it was a real slog. It was tasty, but probably not worth doing twice… Plus the cheese has such a strong smell that I couldn’t just use half of it for pasta. The smell made it hard to put back in the fridge… so I had no choice but to make a huge batch of pasta in one go, which was a bit of a shame. With a block this size, you’d probably need to make enough for 4-5 people.
Soft salami
Not bad as a snack with drinks, but it isn’t cheap.
Kotoka strawberry jam from Nara
These days it seems strawberry jam isn’t just strawberries anymore; they add lemon or something else tart to lift the flavor. Strawberries alone can taste a bit one-note… I enjoyed it, but it tastes a little different from your usual strawberry jam.
Simmered kinmedai
Delicious. Way more satisfying than eating it out.
