Gateway Madurai, a Historic Hotel in Madurai

Madurai is a rural town, but there is one hotel worth staying at. It’s called Gateway Madurai, and it’s said to date back to the British colonial era. Maybe that’s why both the location and the facilities are excellent. The price isn’t that expensive either. If I ever make a lot of money, it would be fun to live by wandering between places like this.

That said, it sits alone on top of a hill, so it isn’t close to the city center, and there are no convenience stores nearby. Even taking that into account, it was worth a one-night stay.

If you look closely near the entrance, there are wild peacocks. And not just one or two of them… it gives the place a certain atmosphere.

Entrance

This is the entrance, but the hotel itself is spread across the whole hill, so it’s connected to the other buildings.

Today’s room

Gateway madurai.

Old-fashioned and excellent, as far as I’m concerned.

Bed

Gateway madurai.

Couldn’t ask for more than this.

Garden

Gateway madurai.

This kind of scenery feels very British too.

City view

Gateway madurai.

Since the hotel is on top of a hill, the view is great.

Oh my…

Gateway madurai.

A scene from the colonial era, you might say…

Ground floor

Plumeria

Gateway madurai.

Quite atmospheric.

Peacocks

Gateway madurai.

They were just flying around freely…

Walkway connecting to another building

Gateway madurai.

Since the 1890s…

Gateway madurai.

That’s old. A hotel where you can feel the history… that alone makes it worthwhile, I think.

Night view of downtown Madurai

Gateway madurai.

It didn’t come out well in the photo, but the night view really was wonderful. Having a drink while looking out at a night view like this is what I’d call luxury. I imagine that’s why the well-off people around here hold their gatherings at hotels like this one.
