Keumdonok in Jongno

I had no idea, but apparently a fairly famous barbecue place has opened in Jongno.

A place like this

The home of pork galbi and naengmyeon, so they say.. I got the feeling it’s popular with the MZ generation.

Daeyeop

Right next door there’s a naengmyeon place called Daeyeop, and I hear it’s run by a chef who appeared on Culinary Class Wars as a black spoon. Apparently there’s a branch in Seongsu too.. His part got edited out and never made it to air, but he seems to be riding that wave and doing good business.

Today’s sponsored bottle

A whisky flown in all the way from India, I’m told. On the rocks it went down pretty well.

Table setting

All the basics come out.

Meat

We start with saeng-galbi, the unmarinated ribs.

Close-up

The meat is on the thin side, but it tasted good.

Gejang

You can tell they put some thought into the banchan.

Grilled up nicely

It does take a while to cook through.

Complimentary seasoned tripe

You get it if you do something on social media, apparently, but either way, much appreciated.

Pork neck

After plenty of galbi, we moved on to other cuts.

Marinated galbi

This one’s tasty too.

Stir-fried kimchi

Ice cream to finish

Eating this well, no corkage, and dessert on top of it — my satisfaction went through the roof. It almost felt like too much of a good thing.. Apparently going to Daeyeop for naengmyeon as a second round is a nice course, but I was way too full, so I headed straight to Barolo.
