Whole Brown, a Bakery in Mokdong

Whole Brown is a rye and wholewheat bread specialist produced by the well-known Artisan Bakers, apparently.

The place

Whole brown.

A search turned up a few branches around the country, and I went to the closest one, in Mokdong.

The bread

Whole brown.

You can tell it’s a place where a proper baker is doing the work.

The bread

Whole brown.

It all looked good.

On my first visit, though, they weren’t selling any rye bread..

Whole brown.

I asked why not, and they said they only make a small amount.. better to order the day before and come pick it up. That was when I learned rye bread isn’t all that popular..

Every one of them looked wholesome.

So I bought the bacon and cheese épi

Whole brown.

This was good.. I love épi but it’s hard to find anyone who does it well, and to find it here of all places.. Though maybe because it’s made with wholewheat, it’s less chewy than a regular épi. It does feel more wholesome, mind you..

Whole brown.

Mokdong seems to have plenty of decent bakeries..

This is a market over by Kachisan..

Whole brown.

Kachisan is the last stop on the BRT, and I rode it once out of curiosity — turns out it connects straight to subway Line 5. Handier than I expected..

If something catches my eye I take a photo first and think about it later..

Back again..

Whole brown.

This time the bacon épi was sold out.. bit of a shame..

The bread

Whole brown.

I’d reserved mine in advance and picked it up.

The aroma really is wonderful, and it has a lovely nutty flavour. The sourness is on the mild side, though. It’s a rye bread that’s easy to eat every day. I suppose a place that’s good at what it does really is good at everything..
