Dough Society, a pizzeria in Seongsu-dong

Dough Society is a pizzeria in Seongsu, and I went because I heard that the pizzaiolo working there used to run Pizzeria EGO, a well-known pizza place in Mangwon-dong.

The front entrance

Dough society.

It has a very Seongsu-dong feel to it.

The menu

Dough society.

I honestly can’t tell whether these prices count as expensive for Seongsu-dong. Anyway, we ordered in an almost omakase-ish way.

Hanwoo carpaccio

Dough society.

One look and you can tell this is wine-bar food rather than pizzeria food.

Octopus

Dough society.

A dish that feels optimised for wine.

Hanwoo meatballs

Dough society.

We got to try quite a variety before the pizza arrived.

Margherita

Dough society.

The pizza here is tasty, but the carb ratio is high.. you can probably tell just from the photos.. Anyway, we’re not exactly light eaters, and most people would be done after a pizza or two, so a high carb ratio wouldn’t be much of a problem for them — but eating them one after another, I did start to get a bit tired of it.. Then again, if I were in my twenties I might well love pizza like this, so maybe the biggest problem was that I came to Seongsu for pizza at my age.

‘Nduja & chorizo

Dough society.

Delicious.

Carbonara

Dough society.

They seem to have done a lot of research on this one — the guanciale looks house-made too, and it feels like a faithful recreation of the original carbonara flavour. Eating it, though, I did think that a dish like this really comes into its own with wine alongside.

Vongole

Dough society.

This kind of thing is drinking food too.

Wagyu

Dough society.

Delicious.

Salad

Dough society.

Cacio e pepe

Dough society.

Apparently this one is a special pizza that isn’t on the menu, and pepper is the main flavour.

Davide Barbero chocolate

Dough society.

I’m the one who said this was good and brought it along, but it turned out to be just so-so. Sorry, everyone..

Clynelish 24 Year Old

Dough society.

For me, Clynelish tastes like the model student of whiskies: the faint sweetness of the barley and a touch of peat smoke flow into a clean finish with no rough edges. There are so many charming whiskies in the world, from the punchy Islays onwards, and I don’t think it’s easy for a whisky this unassertive to get picked as anyone’s favourite.. But.. maybe it’s because I’ve been a goody-two-shoes all my life.. it turns out this is exactly my taste.. I’d better savour the bottle of Clynelish I have at home..
