Hamamatsucho has a fair number of hidden high-end restaurants. It’s close to Ginza, but I suppose the real demand comes from all the offices around here. Honhama used to be famous for its cheap tai-meshi (sea bream rice) at lunch, but these days they’ve switched to a reservation-only system. The economy must be picking up. On this day an acquaintance from Korea was in town, so we went together.
Appetizer
It’s a sea bream-shaped monaka, filled with all sorts of things. Makes a nice appetizer.
The filling
Not a dessert, mind you..
Sashimi topped with mentaiko.
The dishes come with a slight creative twist.
House-made ham
What a beautiful color. It tasted pretty good too.
Uni chawanmushi
With uni in it, there’s no way it could taste bad..
Sashimi
Great quality.
The setup for the main course, tai-gohan
Setup, part 2
Tai-gohan
They break down the sea bream and mix it well into the rice.
Inside
Dipping the sea bream in egg and having it over rice again.
A combination that can’t possibly go wrong.
Crispy scorched rice
They also brought out their signature nitsuke (simmered fish), but I have no photo of it T_T Anyway, the sea bream rice alone was worth the price of admission.
The dessert is excellent too.
And even fruit..
A thoroughly satisfying meal. With food this good, no wonder it’s popular. If this were in Ginza it would easily cost 1.5 times as much. I guess you could say I felt the hidden strength of Hamamatsucho..
