My Japanese Cup Noodle Picks of 2016

Thanks to work, I ended up living on cup noodles for a few months, not exactly by choice. Looking back, it was all pretty pointless… and now I’m suffering through the days trying to lose the weight. Anyway, there were a lot of interesting cup noodles in the mix, so here they are.

Sapporo Ichiban Pasta Deli Tomato Sauce

cupramen

Pasta made with 100% durum semolina and ripe tomatoes. Nothing about it feels like a cup noodle; it tastes almost like real pasta.

Curry Meshi

cupramen

Nissin’s Curry Meshi: strangely enough, you just add hot water and it turns into beef curry rice. It tastes almost identical to homemade curry. There are lots of variations, but the original is the best.

Tsuta’s ramen

cupramen

It’s supposed to be the taste of a Michelin-starred ramen shop, but honestly it was just so-so.

Pokka Sapporo’s Jikkuri Kotokoto Kongari Pan

cupramen

It’s soup with chunks of bread in it, and the soup itself is so rich that the two go really well together. The pumpkin soup was my favorite…

Nissin’s Tom Yum Kung Cup Noodles

cupramen

The tom yum kung flavor is spot on. It seems to have plenty of fans in Korea too.

Acecook’s Wakame Ramen

cupramen

A ramen loaded with wakame seaweed, mild and not overpowering. Really tasty.

Sapporo Ichiban Shio Ramen

cupramen

Loaded with vegetables, which gives the broth a natural sweetness. Another very well-made cup noodle.

Acecook’s Butakim (Pork Kimchi) Ramen

cupramen

Surprisingly Korean-tasting for a Japanese cup noodle.

Nissin’s Tsukiji Ebikin

cupramen

A cup noodle with a deep, rich shrimp flavor.

Acecook Noodle Harusame, Tanita Shokudo Tantanmen Flavor

cupramen

Mild, low in calories, and still tasty.

Acecook Beef Pho

cupramen

It’s made at Acecook’s factory in Vietnam and is said to be very close to the local taste. It was better than most pho restaurants I’ve been to.

Nissin Donbei

cupramen

Nissin’s flagship cup noodle line, Donbei, is good across the board, but the niku udon and kakiage udon were the standouts.

Each company’s signature product was good in its own way. I’ve eaten my fill of cup noodles this time around, so I don’t think I need to try any new ones from here on. Time to lose the weight…
