Toward the end of the Lunar New Year holiday, I got together with a few people who have a real talent for drinking and threw a home party at a friend’s place. Just like at the barbecue, it turned into a feast of all sorts of ingredients and booze.
The booze of the day..
There is even a Chamisul in there
Époisses cheese
This is a cheese I love, and it stinks like crazy. I never imagined a cheese like this would make it into Korea. (You can buy it at the Shinsegae main store.) It is so good that I brought it along, and maybe because this was a gourmet crowd, everyone liked it. At any other gathering it might have been thrown out for the smell.
I also brought some IKEA crackers to finish off the light snack setup.
And a bit of gorgonzola too.
Guacamole
Made quickly and made well. The avocado and tomato prep was done at light speed.
Beet salad
Dishes you would normally only see in restaurants kept coming out one after another.
Gwamegi brought in from Haegu Sikdang in Pohang
The food here comes from all over the country.
The gwamegi set
Gwamegi from the source is a bit different. Glistening with oil. Now that I have had Haegu Sikdang’s gwamegi, I have no regrets left.
Probably a special pine nut sauce?
A cocktail mixed on the spot
It was a bourbon cooler, and it was so good~ It does kind of feel like only snacks and drinks have come out so far, but that is fine by me.
Sake-steamed clams
This was meant to be the hangover dish, but it showed up already. It was quite a success. The person who made it that night even said so themselves, that it gave them a lot of confidence.
Meat and lasagna in preparation
The cost of the cheese that went into the lasagna is staggering. And then those cuts of meat.. The only problem was that we had already eaten so much that we were getting full..
Around this point, the Samjin Eomuk from Busan arrived by KTX.
The whisky I brought
Delicious as always. It seems light, but it is actually 55% ABV, and a crisp peaty note rounds off the finish. Coming across an unusual whisky with this much character is really down to luck. In that sense, I think I am a pretty lucky guy.
The fish cake soup is done
Since it was bought after standing in line, the quality was on another level from the fish cake in an ordinary fish cake soup. It was a bit too sweet, which was a shame, but I do not know whether it is always like that or whether it came out that way in the cooking. Next time I get the chance I will have to order some myself.
Croquettes too..
These are apparently the famous croquettes from Samjin Eomuk, and they went great with drinks. This gathering somehow feels like it ended with us eating nothing but snacks (and hangover soup)..
