There is a well-reviewed ramen shop in Yeongdong Market, so I went to check it out. I usually eat ramen when I am in Japan, but somehow I ended up going here.
The front entrance
It was a bit odd to see a ramen shop doing business right in the middle of an alley like Yeongdong Market, which is full of bars for middle-aged guys. There was no line of customers, but enough people to fill the seats.
Side dishes
Nothing special..
Tonkotsu miso ramen
Seeing the black garlic oil floating on top, it felt like a modified Kumamoto or Kurume ramen. The taste is Kyushu style too. The broth is not that punchy, so you could not really call it Kumamoto ramen, though. The long-simmered broth seems to be the main selling point of this place, and as expected it was smooth. The broth alone was close to Japanese standards.
The noodles
But the noodles felt quite overcooked. I do not know whether they were adjusted to Korean taste or simply boiled too long by mistake, but it was a bit disappointing.
They say the tomato ramen here is good, so if I visit again I should probably try that. But the noodles left a big scar, so I am not sure when I will be back.
Lately I have been noticing ramen shops that are said to be good on blogs and Twitter, but if you go expecting Japan you might be a little disappointed. (I have not been to all of them and I have no plans to, but probably..) If you go without expecting too much and with a light heart, it should be fine.
