Beautiful weather in May, just what Golden Week should be. I wanted to go somewhere, but work was busy, so I settled for somewhere nearby: Tim Ho Wan, which had opened not long ago…
Scenery on the way
The weather is glorious…
I lined up at Tim Ho Wan, but maybe because it overlapped with Golden Week, there were way too many people. So partway through I grabbed some dim sum from the takeout counter.
Dim sum
It’s something like a streusel bun, a bit sweet… with meat inside. It tastes fine, but it feels more like a snack.
The line
It’s long… well, once the opening buzz dies down it should be easier to get in.
Menu
The prices are really cheap… Getting the taste of Hong Kong at these prices, I can see why the line is so long.
Inside
For such a long line, the interior is calm.
Ma lai go
It’s described as Steamed Egg Cake, and it was a lot like castella. Delicious.
Deep-fried eggplant with shrimp
It made me wonder whether Chinese food had always been this good. There’s a depth to it that’s different from Japanese cuisine.
Shrimp dumplings (har gow)
Of course the dumplings are good…
Poached lettuce
Gotta have some salad too…
Steamed rice roll with char siu
I really like the wrapper.
Sticky rice in lotus leaf
Until now I’d always assumed lotus-leaf sticky rice wasn’t any good.
Inside
But it’s so good it nearly brought tears to my eyes. A flavor I hadn’t been able to find in Japan until now.
Pan-fried green chili stuffed with white fish and pork
With pork and shrimp as the mainstays, the ingredients are starting to feel a bit repetitive… but still, it was so good…
Mushroom and bamboo shoot spring rolls
Yep… this made me resolve to visit China someday. Hong Kong at the very least…
Osmanthus jelly
It smelled like autumn. How do they turn out dishes like this at these prices…
Coconut milk with tapioca
I liked this dessert too. I just wish the menu had a few more options.
Well fed, I wandered around the neighborhood.
Lexus cafe
At Tokyo Midtown Hibiya there seem to be more shops with a clear concept than actual foodie destinations.
Cafe menu
Surprisingly, the menu is quite reasonable.
An event at Hibiya Park
There were all kinds of food events going on, but the lines were long and I was full, so I just headed home…
